Social and Emotional Developement:

Social-emotional development includes the child's experience, expression, and management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships with others.

Originating Idea: Emotions

Curriculum Area: Social and Emotional Development

Materials:

  • Happy Face Cut-Out

  • Sad Face Cut-Out 

  • Angry/Mad Face Cut-Out

  • Scared/Fear Face Cut-Out

Appropriate Age Group: 2 and up

Beginning of Activity:

For this activity talk to the children about emotions. Explain to the children what all the cut-out faces mean. Have the children pick how they feel in the moment. 

Middle of Activity

Early:

While doing this activity with early staged learners, they may not be able to verbally tell you how their feeling. You may have to explain to them further by showing them your own facial expressions. 

Middle:

While doing this activity with middle staged learners, the children will be able to express how their feeling by holding up the cut-outs and telling you what their feeling. 

Later:

While doing this activity with later staged learners, these children will be able to tell you how their feeling and may also be able to tell you why their feeling that way. 

                                                      

End of Activity

After this activity, ask the children to express how their feeling in groups. Have all the "Happy" children get together etc. 

Follow-up Ideas:

Post a chart in your classroom about feels. Put the faces on the chart so the children can go back and review.

Name of Activity: Pass the Ball

Originating Idea: Playing with Others

Curriculum Area: Social and Emotional Development

Materials:

  • Small and Large Sized Balls

  • Children

Appropriate Age Group: 12-24 Months

Beginning of Activity:

During this activity, we will be rolling the ball from one child to another. This activity will be fun for the children to engage with each other.

Middle of Activity

Early:

While doing this activity with early staged learners, you may want to play with these children close together and help these children roll to each other. 

Middle:

While doing this activity with middle staged learners, the children will be able to roll the ball to each other back and fourth. 

Later:

While doing this activity with later staged learners, the children will be able to roll the ball back and fourth. Have these children scoot back and try pushing the ball a further distance. Also, another thing these children could try is adding another ball. 

                                                      

End of Activity

After this activity, talk to the children about how they enjoyed playing in a group setting. 

Follow-up Ideas:

Allow the children to play with the balls at their disclosure. Putting them into a basket for the children.

Originating Idea: Group Participation

  • Large Circle/Group Time

Appropriate Age Group: 1-2 Years

Beginning of Activity:

During this activity, the children will be dancing with

each other and solely as themselves individually. 

Middle of Activity

Early:

During this activity with early staged learners, some children may be more comfortable just doing the dancing as a large group instead of solely on their own. 

Middle:

During this activity with early staged learners, these children will be able to dance in a large setting and alone in front of their peers. 

Later:

During this activity with later staged learners, these children will be able to dance in front of children and without being timid. These children will also be able to dance freely in large group setting. 

End of Activity

After this activity follow up with the children, ask if they enjoyed dancing with the other children. 

Follow-up Ideas:

Ask children if they enjoyed dancing in large group. 

Ask the children if they enjoyed dancing by themselves.
